True Love

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails (1 Cor. 13:4-8a). (The verses above is from NASB).

The verses above describe the characteristics of true love. These qualities can certainly be found in the person of Jesus Christ, and they can be found also in all truly loving relationships. The problem with trying to "find" love in modern dating, is that too often people don't look for these characteristics. Rather people look at physical appearance, popularity, or wealth. These are not the qualities that God looks at and neither should we.

Love is best seen as devotion and action, not an emotion. Love is not exclusively based on how we feel. Certainly our emotions are involved, but they cannot be our only criteria for love. True devotion will always lead to action—true love.

Our society confuses love and lust. Unlike lust, God's kind of love is directed outward toward the person whom we love, not inward toward ourselves. It is utterly unselfish. Love is as strong as death. It cannot be killed by time or disaster, and, since it is priceless, it cannot be bought for any price, because it is freely given.
